Carrousel Wind Turbine (CWT)

A new wind turbine is proposed by Professor Ara K. Amiryan from the Armenian Agricultural Academy. It is suited for regions with low mean mind velocity, such as Armenia. Conventional horizontal rotational axis turbine (HAWT) needs high wind velocity (usually above 6m/s) and must be externally adjusted to face the direction of the wind. The proposed prototype uses a vertical rotational axis. It has multiple levels of wind wheels. Each wind wheel consists of four horizontal beams extending from the central shaft. There are four vanes for each wind wheel, propelled by the wind to sail around the vertical shaft. The wind turbine is connected to the generator through a coupling and a reducer. The advantages of the new design are that (1) it auto-regulates its own movement by the braking effect of the opposing vane at any moment; (2) it requires no external mechanism to turn the turbine in the direction of wind.
