Transistor-Plus Vertical Solar CellDr. Gagik Ayvazyan is the CEO of Transistor Plus Co. in Armenia. Transistor-Plus technology uses a plastic Fresnel lens to concentrate sunlight onto a proprietary, high-performance silicon vertical multi-junction solar cell. The proprietary vertical multi-junction solar cell (VSC) is a rugged high-voltage and low series resistance concentrator solar cell with vertical junctions and contacts providing near optimum current collection without sheet resistance, current crowding and blockage of illumination. The vertical cell requires far less silicon than conventional cells, which should help minimize price fluctuations due to silicon price volatility. In addition, the design can improve high-voltage output for small solar cell dimensions, a feature that makes this device attractive for many applications where other designs are impractical. Transistor-Plus vertical solar cells can be manufactured in commercial semiconductor foundries, commonly used in sectors such as the computer chip industry. This allows better use of excess foundry capacity without having to invest heavily in new custom-built equipment. As a result, Transistor-Plus’s proprietary technology can be put into mass production quicker and with lower capital expenditures than any other solar-electric technology. |
